I was driving home from a Young Life committee meeting last night and the song “That Kind of Love” by Pierce Pettis played through my speakers. Pettis is a songwriter and folk artist I have heard play at Cafe Lena in Saratoga Springs. I like his music, but I don’t remember having heard this song before. Here’s the first verse, and you can listen to the song below:
Can’t be bought, or sold, or faked: that kind of love
It always gives itself away: that kind of love
It’s wiser than the wisest sage, its innocence makes me ashamed
‘Til I’m not sure I can take that kind of love ¹
The lyrics struck me because I had spent a good part of the day contemplating “that kind of love.” My day began by having breakfast with a leader who had been a key part of the team that planned two Young Life clubs last week: one for adults and parents on Thursday night, and then for middle school kids the very next night. I loved hearing Paul talk about all of the little things that he paid attention to, so that Christ’s love could be seen and felt in the program and in relationships.
In the middle of the day, a fellow leader and I headed over to the high school to see a track meet. We talked to kids that we knew, and we watched them throw and run. One kid in particular made a point of thanking us for coming to see him compete. I have a friend who is fond of saying “You can fake caring, but you can’t fake showing up.” Showing up is a small thing, but it is a reflection of “that kind of love.” My own life was turned around at the age of 17 when a college student named Mike started showing up in my life.
My day ended by meeting with a group of adults on our local Young Life committee. We spent the better part of two hours thinking, planning and praying about how to encourage, support and sustain the work of Young Life leaders and staff in the area. We talked about how to love, how to give, how to support, how to encourage. In the events that we celebrate this Holy Week, Jesus demonstrated “that kind of love.” What a privilege to be a part of team, both locally and worldwide, that lives to make it known and felt.
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 (NIV)
