Tuesday, 9/3: Started this day at the Burnt Hills Diner with my friend Paul, who met Christ this summer at YL camp (That’s a story for another time). Later in the day, headed to Burlington, VT, for a meeting with adults. On the way, I stopped to meet with Kyle Esposito, who is in training to be the Area Director in the Southern Adirondack area. Beautiful drive to Burlington, and dinner at Panera Bread on Church street before heading to my meeting. Met with four adults who are committed to see YL begin in this community again. Agreed on a strategy to have a launch meeting in the spring with a target of 30 or more in attendance. Headed to Lincoln, VT to stay with the Goodyears.
Wednesday, 9/4: Great morning with the Goodyears, our staff family in Addison County, VT. Hiked up to a spot called “Sunset Ledge” with Todd. Great conversation up and down, and a chance to pray for the land and the people stretched out before us, all the way to Lake Champlain in the distance. Jen sent me with a great Turkey sandwich and homemade chocolate chip cookies for the ride home. Some time with the family when I got home, before hosting 20 or so high school kids for Campaigners at our house.
Thursday, 9/5: Headed up to Saranac with the family for a long weekend. First up was a 24-hour training overnight with the regional staff associates. Great discussions with these young staff about building communities of Christ-centered volunteer leaders. Got a phone call at dinner from a college student I know in the Burlington area. She would like to connect with YL in Burlington as we get things going again. Yes!
Friday-Sunday, 9/6-8: The rest of the Greater Northeast Region YL staff arrived on Friday for a weekend of sharing stories from the summer, focusing on Jesus, and dreaming and planning for the year ahead. Dominant theme from the scriptures was “Take Courage” in the midst of fearful circumstances (Matthew 14:22).
Monday, 9/9: BH volunteer leaders Karl and Kristan joined us for dinner, before Karl, Kristan and I headed out to Pizza Works to hang out with some kids for the night. Fun to see kids after being gone in the month of August. Karl and I finished the night watching one of my favorites: Band of Brothers. So many leadership lessons embedded in that mini-series.
Jesus, thank you for the week that you gave me. As I reflect on it, I see that you are doing so much just in my little corner of the world. Please work in and through me to play whatever role you want me to play in these communities and the people who live in them. Most of all, help me to understand that you go before me and that you are with me. Use this work to draw my heart closer to yours.
